It's widely understood that with all triptans, if taken early on during a migraine attack when pain is mild, outcomes can be improved. It's important to reach a therapeutic level of a triptan prior to the development of cutaneous allodynia, generally in the first hour of a migraine attack, to offer the maximum potential for enhanced efficacy.1
Knowing that the pain of a migraine may progress during an attack, it’s hard to imagine why patients would delay taking their medication at the onset of a migraine. While there are many possible reasons that may cause them to delay, in a survey of 1160 migraineurs published in Headache, concerns about adverse events led to a delay in taking medication in 37% of treated migraine episodes.2 For patients who often experience migraines during the day when they need to be more productive, feeling sleepy and tired after taking their medication may cause them to wait, which could lead to inconsistent outcomes.
Minimal side effects may give AXERT patients the confidence to treat earlier, which could result in improved outcomes.
